The trances in meditation are themed, and follow a structure that is designed to take the listener on a journey through the mind.

Examples are a walk through a rainforest, an amble by a country brook, descent into a dungeon etc.  Strong imagery is utilised to direct the trance through a structured path, in the same way as one would write a short story.

Frequently meditations invoke explorations of the inner self, but within a clearly established framework and metaphor.
